Wa Sung's Educational Grants committee awarded a $1,000 check to Lincoln Elementary School in Oakland contributing to the overnight 5th grade science camp in Yosemite. Educational Grants Co-Chairs, Alex Lock and Doreen Lew, presented the check to 5th-grade teacher Rob Fong and Principal Ivanna Huthman during Santa's visit on December 19.
The science camp introduces the 5th graders to life and earth sciences, California history, teamwork, and more in a beautiful natural setting. This Yosemite learning experience will be coordinated with their Lincoln School curriculum that includes journal writing, social studies, and science experiments.
The students are mostly low-income, Asian, and Oakland Chinatown residents with many newcomers and English language learners. The exposure to nature is an invaluable learning tool. This program is in its 11th year and will benefit approximately 100 students and improve their basic learning skills.
Fifth-grade teacher Rob Fong and Principal Ivanna Huthman expressed their appreciation and thanked Wa Sung Community Service Club for this grant.
