Monarch Bay Golf Course in San Leandro was the site for this year’s golf tournament, the old Tony Lema Golf Course – remodeled and stretched to challenge our golfers! The weatherman cooperated with great golfing weather, sunny but with a cooling breeze to keep the golfers from overheating. The past 3 days were hot with days over 100 degrees; the cooldown could not have come at a better time! The golf course was challenging with rolling hills, 90+ large sand bunkers and small greens. Adding to the challenge to keep the scores down were the ducks of all sizes and kinds, and several coyotes were checking out our carts so we watched their movements as we moved about the fairways and greens to make sure they did not take off with our snacks or water from the carts. Steady breezes on the back 9 kept all the golfers pressing to keep their shots low and long not wanting their shots to get stuck in the winds and losing control.
We want to thank the volunteers for the outstanding job they did at the beginning of the tournament by staffing the tables; we had Cindy Quon, Donna Chan-Chu signing up the golfers. Selling the mulligans and magic string was Laura Chan. Making sure all the golfers received their lunches were Doreen Lew, Cheryl Yukumoto and Genie Young; also assisting were Edgar Woo and Malynda Norstadt.
We had a total of 34 golfers who came to play and judging from the scores they were geared to play and score well. Our winning foursome with the low net score of 64 was Ben Wong, Rob Conrad, Peter Ho and Jing Zhou; great job guys! Coming in with the low gross score of 65 was the team of Gerry Wong, Scott Wallace and Gilbert Cardenas; wow that’s playing as a team!
Winning the longest drive on hole #12 was Jing Zhou. When I got to the tee box I could not see the marker. It was so far down the fairway! In the "Closest to the Pin" contests the winners were: Ben Wong #7, Tim Chu #10 (also the Dixon Challenge) and on #17 Frank Chiang and Ching Ou our only women golfer! Just awesome drives and a great way to score on those tough par 3’s! Unfortunately we did not have a winner for #4; it was our money hole where the player closest to the pin would win money, a 50/50 sharing of the money collected from all golfers wishing to participate in the jackpot for that hole. The money collected will be carried over to next year and will make the money hole for 2016 huge! Monitoring the money hole were volunteers Edgar Woo, measuring, Genie Young taking pictures and Doreen Lew collecting the jackpot money – many thanks for being out at the green for all 4 hours of the tournament and taking all the great pictures of the golfers as they came to the 4th hole!
During dinner we auctioned a round of golf for 4 at Sequoyah Country Club donated by Wa Sung member Guy Dilling and 4 Box Seat tickets to the Oakland A’s baseball game in 2016 donated by another Wa Sung member – Kinley Wong. Many thanks for the generous donations by Guy Dilling and Kinley Wong! Also during dinner we had a few door prizes which were awarded by raffle tickets distributed to all golfers attending the dinner! Some of the prizes awarded were gift cards to Starbucks, rounds of golf at Roddy Ranch, golf balls, bottles of wine and Clambake tickets! We want to thank all the sponsors; Dr. Lawrence Ng, Arnold Mew, Annis Skousen, Jeff and Cindy Quon, Cheryl Wong, Clayton and Cheryl Yukumoto, Deborah Pan, Pete’s ACE Hardware and Melanie Lew for their generous donations to the tournament.
During the dinner Tim Chu surprised us and gave Wa Sung a $500 donation for trophys for the 2016 Golf Tournament! WOW we are off to a great start on the 2016 Golf Tournament which will be our 10th Annual Golf Tournament!! Thank You Tim Chu for your generous donation!
We want to thank all the golfers who gave of their time and energy to participate in our golf tournament, the Co-Chairs and the volunteers who made the event work smoothly and go without a hitch, and the sponsors who were very generous in their donations to the tournament! We hope to see everyone back in 2016 for our 10th annual golf tournament which from all indications will be the best! Stay tuned for more details!
